4 Areas in Nairobi at Risk of Flooding – Govt Spokesperson

Government Spokesperson Colonel (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna on Thursday, October 17, listed four areas in Nairobi where residents were at a high risk of experiencing floods.

Oguna, through a video, cautioned Mathare, Kibra, Mukuru and Kawangware residents to be on high alert.

“People who are living in these areas are advised to avoid being near river banks so that they may not be washed away,” he warned.

The spokesman also informed that so far, the heavy downpour across the country had claimed six lives in different counties.

“Four people have died from flooding in Meru, one in Turkana and another lost in Mandera,” Oguna confirmed as he listed the casualties.

He also mentioned that livestock had also been swept away in the floods that hit Marsabit County.

The news comes after the Meteorological Department of Kenya gave an update on the heavy rainfall that was being recorded in the country.

In a notice dated October 14, 2019, the department reported that the wet season would continue in many parts of the country.

The weatherman had highlighted more than 40 affected counties with residents in the mentioned areas advised to be on the lookout for potential floods.

Reports from Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali indicated that more than 1,000 people from 200 homes had been displaced by the floods.

He disclosed that 2,977 goats, 760 cows and 7 camels were lost when floods wrecked havoc in his county.
