- Early this year, the internet became abuzz with the news of a fallout between Owen Mwatia (Daddy Owen) and his wife Farida Wambui
- Although a celebrity, Owen was ill-prepared for the flood of words that were directed at him on all social platforms and it took its toll on him
- He has since employed several methods to get back on his feet, with an album and a festival to boot
Owen Mwatia aka Daddy Owen was just going about his life, minding his business when the worst that could happen happened; he was trending!
One fine morning he found himself on platforms like Twitter and Facebook and his business had been aired for all and sundry, with the seasoned musician humorously pointing out that some of it was foreign even to him.
Marriage was over
No, it wasn’t because of a new album launch, not another hit normally associated with ‘Papa Fololo’ hitmaker, but the trending news was that his marriage of five years to Farida Wambui was over and his wife had since left the matrimonial home.
TUKO.co.ke caught up with him almost a year later and he talked about mental health, how celebrities get affected and what he is up to now.
Tuko.co.ke: This has been quite the year for you; please tell us about you waking up to a social media that was abuzz about you at the most trying time of your life?
Daddy Owen; It was really a tough time. I rarely trend on social media because I live a very private life, as much as I am a celebrity. It was crazy news flying in from all corners; some of the information was even foreign to me.
Tell us about that and how it feels for people who go through it?
It’s weird because you are caught off-guard! Plus you don’t know how to respond, worse thing is that my name is the one that was trending but I guess it comes with the territory.
You had talked about suffering depression just before your divorce. Please tell us about that experience
Depression is the worst feeling ever! You feel like your body is battling with your mind!! I was so confused and I had to pray a lot, seek counselling from a pastor and a professional psychologist, talked to my big brother a lot and some friends who stood by me.
Please talk about mental health and celebrities, some of the causes, and do they ever have a refuge in their troubles?
Mental health is prevalent among celebrities, problem is that society perceives celebrities as superhuman and then celebrities embrace it. This makes it so hard to admit when you are going through something because many feel like they don’t want to lose their “status”.
Is mental health a common topic among celebrities?
Very common! That’s why so many celebrities resort to taking drugs and alcoholism.
The divorce period, how was it and are you still holding on to the ring?
My ring is a sign of a covenant. Not to a human being but to GOD.
You look much better now than the figure you cut then. How did you pull yourself up?
I pray a lot! Listen to the word of God a lot plus I ended up doing the things that I really love. Opening up to friends did counselling as well.
Did anyone help you through it?
Yes!! I have a huge support system, more so my family, friends and pastors.
What is your message to men going through marriage troubles and divorce now?
Marriage has its challenges but its important to know that as a man you should talk to your friends, parents, or pastor or even counsellors. It is very important to share and let out what you feel because sometimes we try to tackle too much till we are overwhelmed, that’s when we speak out or fall into depression
You launched a new album, what’s its main message?
The New Daddy Owen going back to the first love of Christ.
How was the reception?
Amazing! Not in terms of sales, numbers, downloads etc. but in terms of my healing process and preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ.
You are big on a peaceful election period. Please tell us about that campaign
I believe nowadays celebrities we focus on trending and mostly for all the wrong reasons, yet we have a big role to play in the society. Most young people listen to us more than the way they listen to politicians; we should know the card and the power we carry, use it wisely.
Tell us about the Daddy Owen Festival
This will be a series of events that will primarily focus on promoting peace through arts and raising new talents. We are urging the youths across the country to participate in the elections but in a positive way, not to be misused by politicians through handouts and bad politics. The youth have a right to vote and do the right things during sensitive times.
So what should we look out for next year?
Next year I will be celebrating 20 years in the music ministry! So much is lined up! Watch this space
