The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has banned Diamond Platinum’s Wasafi FM over what they termed as abusive language.
The TCRA said that the presenters of the radio station had gone contrary to licensing regulations by speaking in abusive language.
The Switch and Mashamsamu
According to the TCRA, the offending contents took place on August 1st, between 8 pm and 5 pm, and August 4th, between 10 am and 12 pm.
The TCRA said that the presenters of the two shows, The Switch and Mashamsamu, engaged in heavy abusive language.
The suspension will last seven days, from September 11th to September 18th.
In a statement, Wasafi Radio confirmed the suspension, while also apologising for the ‘abusive content’.
“In respect to the directive by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the Wasafi FM Management would like to apolgise to the TCRA and all Tanzanians for our shows (The Switch and Mashamsamu) for going against licencing regulations for using vulgar language on the shows.
“We humbly accept the suspension from the TCRA would like to apologise once more. For these reasons, we will be off-air from today (September 11) to September 18.” The press release by Wasafi said.
Clouds FM and TV
The suspension on Wasafi follows the suspension of Clouds FM and TV. Clouds were suspended for similar reasons in August.
TCRA suspended Clouds FM and TV on August 27th, over content on their shows ‘360’ and ‘Power Breakfast’.
The content was in violation of the Code of Political Party Elections Broadcasting Act of 2015.
As with Wasafi’s suspension, the Clouds suspension lasted seven days.
The two stations, the TCRA said, announced the results of the nomination process in some constituencies without prior approval from the National Executive Committee.
Tanzania is gearing up for elections on October 28th. President Magufuli is gearing for a re-election. He is facing off against long-term opponent, Tundu Lissu, who recently returned from exile.
