For the whole of 2021, the historical park located along Lang’ata Road was closed off to the public to allow for renovation by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

As the country celebrates Jamhuri Day, it will be an opportunity for the Head of State to relaunch back into service the remodelled and redeveloped ultra-modern public utility.

According to the government, the event will be attended by 11,000 invited guests including government officials, dignitaries, and ordinary citizens.

Several events lined up

State Department of Interior and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho revealed recently that the venue, which was closed for over a year, is now ready for use.

A host of entertainment activities have been lined up by local artists courtesy of the Permanent Presidential Music Commission.

“The event will also involve Trooping the Color by the Kenya Defence Forces,” Kibicho explained.

He added that his ministry will work in conjunction with the Ministry of Health to ensure that attendees adhere to the COVID-19 protocols, with vaccination booths provided to administer the vaccination.

Kibicho reiterated that there are enough vaccines, therefore, anyone including those who won’t attend the event should use the opportunity to get immunised.

Historic Uhuru Gardens

Uhuru Gardens were officially declared a National Monument in 1966 given that it is where the first Kenyan flag was first raised on December 12, 1963.

It was a move that not only marked Kenya’s new birth as an independent country but also cemented the venue in the books of the country’s history.

Two monuments commemorating Kenya’s independence stand tall inside the garden, as well as a Mugumo tree planted on the spot where the British flag was brought down to pave way for the raising of Kenya’s.
