Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has petitioned for divorce from her husband, Kanye West. Her publicist confirmed it, noting that the two have been married for over seven years.
This news comes just a few weeks after US media reported that the celebrities live separately. The two were going for counselling to deal with typical relationship issues.
TMZ, a celebrity gossip site, had speculated that there was a looming divorce. According to them, the separation was “as amicable as a divorce can be.”
Kim Kardashian is demanding joint custody of their four children. Her lawyer, Laura Wasser, handed over the divorce papers to Kanye West on Friday.
Asked whether the celebrity had filed for divorce, Kim Kardashian’s publicist confirmed that it was true. However, the publicist chose to remain mum about the details.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West started dating in 2012. The two had a lavish wedding ceremony in 2014 in Italy. The celebrity couple instantly became a recognizable couple.
For several months, gossip sites speculated that their marriage was on the rocks. Kanye West was reportedly battling mental issues. He once took to his Twitter account to accuse Kim Kardashian and her mother of trying to lock him up. He deleted the tweets later on. Additionally, he launched a controversial foray into US politics.
In July, Kim took to her Instagram to ask the media to have empathy for her husband. She also pointed out that people with mental issues usually have erratic behaviour.
“If you understand mental illness or even compulsive behaviour, know that the family is powerless. The family can only act if the member is a minor,” Kim posted at the time.
