Royal Media Services (RMS) radio station, Radio Citizen continued to lead the pack in the radio stations’ ranking in Kenya in the month of May according to the GeoPoll report.
Mediamax radio station Milele FM climbed to the second position edging out Standard Media Group radio station Radio Maisha which came third while Radio Jambo settled for fourth place.
According to the report, of the four radio stations, only Milele FM showed steady growth from March to May hitting a million mark and that was the reason it replaced Radio Maisha at number two.
The report pointed out that the radio station reported a good number especially in the weekday morning show between 6 am and 10 am hosted by media personalities Felix Oduor popularly known as Jalang’o and Alex Mwakideu.
The station recorded average numbers between 1-1.4 million listeners on average.
“Swahili stations take the lead in the first four slots. However, of the four Swahili stations, only Milele FM has shown steady growth for the 3 months growing from below the 1 million mark listenership unto the 1 million mark. This made Milele move to position two in May 2020 displacing Radio Maisha,” read part of the report.
Radio Africa Group station Kiss FM leads the English radio stations at position five replacing Classic FM. Classic FM morning show is hosted by Maina and King’angi. Hot 96 completes the top ten list with NRG Radio settling for the eleventh position.
A good number of vernacular radio stations have also shown tremendous competition with Inooro FM leading the pack at position seven, Kameme FM follows at position eight with Ramogi FM at ninth position respectively.
The research mentioned that with the Coronavirus pandemic forcing people to stay at home, increased listenership and viewership is expected as the attention is split across the traditional media of TV and radio as well as other media platforms including social media.
