Tanzanians have moved to ensure Diamond’s disqualification from the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards. A section of Tanzanians has already launched a petition to push for the same.
Tanzanians launched the petition against Naseeb Juma, aka Diamond, on change.org. They have based the petition on Diamond’s support for the late Tanzanian President John Magufuli.
BET had nominated Diamond for the Best International Act prize. However, by Sunday, over 16,000 Tanzanians had signed the petition to block him from winning.
“Diamond Platnumz is a world-renowned Tanzania music artist who used his popularity and his talent to deodorize and whitewash the brutal repression of the late dictator John Magufuli and his regime. Additionally, he is a close business ally and friend of Paul Makonda the former Governor of Dar-es-Salaam. The former Governor who has openly persecuted and cracked down on LGBTI people,” part of the petition reads.
Despite the backlash from several Tanzanians, a lawmaker declared his support for the musician.
“We pray Diamond wins the award, in the name of Tanzania,” MP Nusrat Hanje said.
Diamond was a vocal supporter for Dr. Magufuli during the campaign season leading to the general elections. He released a song that Magufuli’s team played throughout the campaign period.
