The Coptic Hospital in Nairobi is on the spot after patients revealed that night nurses and doctors rape them at night.
The County first reported this story.
According to Anne* (not her real name), the hospital admitted her after she sought further medical attention. Anne reveals that she had first gone to the Outspan hospital in Nyeri, where they diagnosed her with Liver Cancer and referred her to the Coptic Hospital.
She immediately left for the health facility on the same day, on the 1st of July 2020. Seeing this liver cancer was a reoccurrence of breast cancer that she had previously fought and overcome, Anne did not want to take chances.
According to Anne, Coptic Hospital admitted her at around 9 PM on the same day. She further explained that this was necessary, seeing that her cancer was in stage 2, and treatment was required.
She was sedated and raped.
However, Anne claims that all hell broke loose on Friday the 3rd of July at night. She explained that the medics heavily sedated her, and she fell into a deep sleep. Someone raped Anne that fateful night who might have been medics on night duty or the elderly in the hospital.
Anne did not realize what was happening that night as the sedatives had taken effect. However, as she was taking her bath then the next morning, she realized something was wrong. The distraught Anne immediately contacted her oncology Dr. Andrew Odhiambo. He reassured her and promised to escalate the matter to the administration.
Sadly, the oncologist did not give any feedback, and he only did tests after Anne persisted on the matter. The oncologist went missing again after the tests and did not provide the results.
The following day on Sunday, Anne’s daughter came to visit her, and that is when the hurt mother explained to her daughter what was going on. The family, after consultation, decided to change Anne from Coptic Hospital on Monday.
However, the management, through Dr. Odhiambo, was denying Anne to exit on Monday. They further tried to convince her to check out on Tuesday. Anne further claims that while there was the exit issue, the medics injected her with an unknown drug that made her weak. She also noted how the doctors disposed of the syringe in a different dustbin than the usual one.
After a long struggle, the hospital finally discharged her. Anne went straight to the Nairobi Women’s’ hospital. They tested her for rape, and the results were positive. She then reported the case at the Kilimani Police Station, where Anne and her daughter recorded their statements. The DCI is now investigating the matter.
