The first phase of the ultra-modern Kakamega County Referral Hospital is expected to be ready by June 2020, the County Government of Kakamega has confirmed.
The hospital’s first phase was expected to be ready by March 2020 but inconsistency in cash flow forced the completion to be delayed by three more months. The County Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has installed a Steering and Technical committee which will work towards beating the June Deadline.
According to the Governor, the county is seeking to borrow 2 Billion which will be used to complete the second phase.
The second phase will have a male and female ward, modern Mortuary and School of Medicine. Once it is fully complete, the facility is expected to create job avenues to more than 3000 people. Besides creating employment the hospital is set to save the people in the Western Region from travelling to Kenyatta Hospital in Nairobi and Moi Referral in Eldoret for better treatment.
The County has entered into a partnership with India and America medical institutions. The partnership will see the institutions and the hospital have exchange programs. Doctors from the institutions will be coming to offer quality medical care at the hospital.
Oparanya is confident that the facility will join the list of the best medical centres and it will attract the best doctors from all corners of the world.
“We expect this to be one of the best medical facilities in the country as specialists from top hospitals globally will be linked to the hospital to dispense their services,” he stated.
The County is also keen to convince the National Government to improve the Kakamega Airstrip. Once upgraded, the county airstrip will serve as a link between the hospital and other parts of the country.
