The USA achieved a medical milestone when one coronavirus patient was successfully treated in the country.
Doctors from Washington’s State Hospital treated a patient successfully and discharged him to go home.
The patient showed significant improvement, confirming the drug works.
He was treated with experimental antiviral medication. These type of drugs normally slow down the diseases growth rate. They may also kill the virus causing disease.
A week after his admission to the hospital, the patient developed pneumonia. His health status worsened as doctors became more worried.
The doctors cast a vote to decide on whether to administer the experimental drug on him. The majority agreed to put him on the medication while observing him.
Within 24 hours of administering the experimental drug, his health improved tremendously. His fever reduced as his condition stabilized.
Dr George Diaz, a member of the medical team handling coronavirus, felt the patient was ready to go home. According to him, he had shown remarkable improvements.
The local health facility will look after him while he is at home.
His improvement has sparked hope that the disease can be contained and future deaths prevented.
The experimental drug dealing with coronavirus
The experimental drug is called Remdesivir. It is an antiviral drug used to deal with respiratory illnesses. Remdesivir was first used to contain Ebola during the outbreak. Gilead Sciences invented it.
The drug can be administered to patients at all levels of the coronavirus.
The USA government has agreed to partner with the Chinese government in the fight against coronavirus.
China has established a trial treatment centre. Patients will be quarantined in that facility.
Candidate patients involved in this program include those at severe and mild stages of the disease.
If this drug successfully works, the coronavirus menace will be dealt with head-on. Many people have lost their lives worldwide as a result.
However, there is no confirmed case in Africa.
The first person died of coronavirus in the USA two days ago. However, the American was located in Wuhan China.
This case comes at a time when the American government faces charges against neglect. While some evacuations were done, not all Americans were rescued. Some are still stuck in China. However, the government is not showing any plans for evacuating them soon.
The United Kingdom has also declared coronavirus a national epidemic, an ‘imminent threat’.
