Aisha Jumwa to face murder charges

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa will face murder charges after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approved the charges on 14th October.

In 2019, police officers linked the MP to the fatal shooting that erupted during by-election campaigns in Kilifi County. Together with her bodyguard Geoffrey Okuto Otieno, Aisha Jumwa is accused of killing Gumbao Jola. Gumbao Jola is the uncle of Reuben Mwambize Katana, an ODM politician.

Detectives have since investigated Aisha Jumwa and her bodyguard for assault, incitement to violence, and the murder claims. The Detectives also investigated Aisha Jumwa’s alleged breach of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

The DPP’s approval of the murder charges comes two months after officers arrested the outspoken MP and charged her with conspiracy to defraud the Malindi National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) of Sh19 million. Additionally, they charged her with acquisition of proceeds of crime, conflict of interest, and money laundering.

In August this year, the MP appeared before a Mombasa court. She pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges. The court released her on a Sh5 million bond with surety or an alternative of Sh2 million cash bail.

Target

After her release, Aisha Jumwa claimed that she knew certain forces were fighting her. She also said the same people would soon ensure that the DPP charges her with murder.

“I know all this is being done to fight me because of my stand, in two weeks they will bring me here again to charge me with murder, but I want to tell them I will not be cowed down by their attempts to bring me down,” Aisha Jumwa said.

Aisha Jumwa has always been a vocal supporter of Deputy President William Ruto. Previously a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, she is now one of Ruto’s key supporters in the Coastal region.

Aisha Jumwa has sworn to fight back those who are coming after her.
