Formers CS for sports Rashid Echesa was on Thursday arrested by detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigation.
Currently, he’s being interrogated at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu road. During the arrest, reports reaching Kenyan News indicate his vehicle was impounded.
Sources say the former CS arrest was due to suspected fraudulent activities.
Last year March, President Uhuru Kenyatta fired Echesa from his position as the Cabinet Secretary for sports.
Today marks his second arrest in a period of nine months.
The former was involved suspicion of butchering innocent individuals in Matungu area, Kakamega county.
While speaking to the press, George Kinoti, DCI boss said. “He is being investigated over fraud involving the purchase of arms. Our officers are questioning him. It’s a fraud involving several other suspects including foreigners.”
The former sports CS was en route Nairobi Kilimani area before his arrest. He had left the Deputy President’s office at Harambee Annex with two other individuals before being flagged down. However, Ruto was not at the office during Echesa’s visit.
“He is being investigated over fraud involving the purchase of arms. Our officers are questioning him. It’s a fraud involving several other suspects including foreigners, “the DCI further added. So far, he has not named the individuals involved.
Police said they had collected tender letters with government letterheads during the arrest. Since being fired as the sports CS, Echesa has continued supporting Ruto’s presidential bid for 2022.
He has also remained politically vocal in the western part of Kenya. Before his dismissal, Echesa remained confrontational with ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
