Suspected Al Shabab gunmen attacked a bus belonging to Moyale Raha company on Wednesday.
The attack occurred at Sarman area, Mandera North. The bus left Mandera town at around 7 am headed to Nairobi
Unconfirmed reports indicate that at least three passengers were killed in the attack.
Moyale Bus Company has confirmed that they have received reports of the attack, but they await further details to issue a statement.
The management added that the bus was sprayed with bullets, the driver tried to speed off only to meet more gunfire ahead.
“We are told the gunmen shot the tyres, but the driver sped off only to get into more gunfire ahead,” said an officer at the company’s offices.
Mandera County Commissioner Mr Onesmus Kyatha confirmed the attack and said his office is yet to get more details.
“Something has happened, but I am waiting for the finer details,” Mr Kyatha said.
The attack comes barely two weeks after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) issued transfer letters to teachers who are non-locals in the region. The move is aimed at curbing non-local targeted attacks, especially on teachers.
Late 2019, the gunmen attacked a construction site in Mandera and burnt down four construction equipment.
