City Residents Gang-up Against Mama Ngina’s Name on Ksh 460M Project

  • Mombasa residents on Friday, November 8, filed a petition at the county assembly to force the government to rename Mama Ngina Waterfront Park.

Led by Muslim Human Rights leaders, the residents claimed that they were not consulted when the park was named after the Kenya’s maiden First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

According to the petition, the residents gave the government two option to choose from; Mekatilili Wa Menza Waterfront Park or Mombasa Waterfront Park.

A petition to rename Mama Ngina Waterfront Park was submitted to the assembly on Friday, November 8.

The residents included their names, places of residence, identification numbers and signatures in the petition.

The document was presented to Mombasa County Assembly Clerk Salim Juma who appreciated the peaceful manner the petitioners had conducted themselves.

Juma vowed to ensure that the petition would be handed to Speaker Haroon Ibrahim Khatri, on Monday, November 11, for presentation to the relevant committee that would discuss it.

Since the park was renovated at a cost of Ksh 460 million,  it has been the subject of discussions.

The petition came barely three days after the High Court in Mombasa stopped the board appointed by Tourism CS Najib Balala from taking over the park.

Justice Patrick Otieno, on Monday, ruled that the park should remain under the management of the County Government of Mombasa.

The application to block the board had been filed by Haki Africa, Institute for Land Governance and Human Rights and five other petitioners.

The County Government of Mombasa, the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the National Land Commission (NLC), were listed as interested parties in the case.
