Embu County Commissioner Abdullahi Galgalo has come to the rescue of an elderly blind couple from Mbeere South after their life was highlighted by NTV.
Few days after their plight was aired, Galgalo organized a fundraiser during the Mashujaa Day Celebrations with the focus being constructing a decent house for the duo that has been living in abject poverty.
The story of the couple, Benjamin Nyaga and Loice Wanja, who were both born blind and spent their marriage life in deplorable conditions, was aired on the local TV station on Saturday, October 17.
The police boss mobilized a fundraiser as the County marked the celebrations and managed to raise Sh70,000 that will be channelled to constructing a house for the couple.
The two love-birds have been married for 40 years and blessed with four children whom they raised amid the struggle.
Loice Wanja noted that they tried their best to educate their kids with some completing high school and others not managing to complete the secondary school.
Nyaga had been selling tobacco for a living since 1967 but had seen his profits dwindle over the years.
The County Commissioner called on leaders of Embu, including the County Governor Martin Wambora to join his vision of raising funds to help the couple.
Galgalo, who said was deeply moved by the story, urged the locals to emulate the resilience of the blind couple that has been peaceful but still struggling to make ends meet.
He directed the area MCA and the Deputy County Commissioner to ensure that a photo was sent to him upon completion of the house and promised to visit the blind couple personally.
The couple will also be enrolled in the cash transfer program designed for the elderly and persons living with a disability.
Galgalo was disappointed by the area chief whom he said should have helped the couple enrol in the program.
