Some workers in Patel farm Nakuru county were drilling a Borehole when some gas exploded. Soon after realizing what had occurred on the site at Patel Coffee Estate all the workers ran for their dear lives to escape from the furious gas.
One of the workers detected the emission of natural gases that were accompanied by a high stream of water that had high pressure. All the workers were frightened when the components from the explosion ignited and formed fire geysers that shot more than four meters high. Within a span, the drilling equipments were reduced to ashes by geysers emission.
Farm managers alerted the relevant authorities who include Deputy County Commissioner from Rongai Julius Kavita and Richard Rotich who is the Sub County Police Commander. The Nakuru County Commander Stephen Matu arrived at the scene and cordoned the scene to avoid any injury as a result of gas emission by the borehole.
The borehole would act as a source of water, but unfortunately, the gas was produced. Matu assured the residents that he had informed geological experts to confirm which gas it was. Some minutes before the experts arrived, the gas had stopped burning. They asserted the farm managers that they will attest whether the borehole is still safe for further use as a source of water.
Solai farm is close to both Menengai Crater and Lake Bogoria. Currently, Menenagi is being used as a primary source of geothermal energy, as Lake Bogoria contains hot water springs. Therefore, once such a gas explosion is experienced nearby, the news are not received as a shock, but a regular occurrence. Locals were advised to wait for the experts to deliver updates concerning the type of gas which was emitted.
