Aisha Jumwa sets up dream team for her gubernatorial race

Kilifi county 2022 gubernatorial rivalry is almost setting pitch after Malindi member of parliament Aisha Jumwa unveiled her team.

Ms Jumwa, a close associate of DP Ruto, is among contenders who’ve shown interest in the seat, with outgoing governor Amason Kingi retiring in a few months.

Speaking at a political event in Kilifi, the Malindi lawmaker declared she would team up with Kilifi North legislature Owen Baya and Juliet Baya, eyeing the woman rep seat.

Additionally, she promised to work with Charo Kazungu, Chief Officer of Public Works, Roads and Transport, who will run for the Ganze MP post.

However, Ms Jumwa is yet to announce her preferred senatorial candidate. She’s stated no politician has come out to ask for her support in the race.

ODM’s Stewart Madzayo currently holds the Senator post.

“The mentioned names are for politicians we have sat together and discussed the way forward regarding the 2022 general elections,” said Jumwa.

2022 national elections

Ms Jumwa won the women representative position during the 2013 general elections before vying for an MP slot in 2017.

Other women who have shown interest in the gubernatorial race in the Coast region include Umra Omar (Lamu), Likoni MP Mishi Mboko (Mombasa), and Kwale Deputy Governor Fatuma Achani.

Ms Jumwa will likely compete against Mr Kingi’s deputy governor Mr Gideon Saburi, Magarini MP Michael Kingi, and Lands and Physical Planning Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Gideon Mung’aro, among others.

Mr Baya, who had previously shown interest in the position, took a back seat to support Jumwa.

 ODM rebels

The two are among those who revolted against Raila Odinga’s ODM party and joined DP Ruto’s camp.

They are, however, yet to make public the parties they’ll use when running for elections.

On the other hand, Ruto has made it clear to run for the 2022 presidency under the United Democratic Alliance party.

During the meeting, Mr Baya spoke boldly about his allegiance with Ms Jumwa.
