A family from Muhoni in Ganze constituency has faulted the orders of the area chief for ordering their daughter to return dowry after separating with her husband.
The estranged husband parted with Ksh 34,000 as dowry for the lady in question. Thaura Mweni, the area’s chief, is allegedly conspiring with the brother-in-law to make the woman’s life hard.
Sanita Kitsao fled her matrimonial home in February this year with her two children to seek refuge at her parents’ house. This decision came after she received numerous death threats from her hostile husband.
According to Sanita, her husband had called her and witch and promised to kill her. She had no choice but to leave with the two youngest, while four children remained under her husband’s care.
The victim’s brother Lemmy Jefwa said that although the chief had severally called a meeting to reconcile the two, he keeps insisting she must return the dowry.
The last meeting between the two parties happened last week on Friday.
Death threats from her husband
In his argument, the victim’s brother said the chief was inconsiderate because he called for a meeting despite the death threats.
“The has openly shown biasness because instead of protecting my sister, he only asks for dowry. We will not take this matter lightly,” said Jefwa.
Following the rampant killing of spouses during this pandemic, Jefwa said he was surprised at how the administrator handled the matter. Additionally, men and women in the county had died after being accused of practicing witchcraft.
Jefwa further added that they reported the matter to Ganze police station on the fifth and 20th of April. On her part, Kitsao said the chief had refused to honor her wish. Instead, he’s insisted that she returns to her abusive husband.
“I fear going back to my marital home because my husband insists that I am a witch. He has promised to cut me into pieces. Besides, how can I return the dowry when I’ve bored him, six children,” lamented Kitsao.
