A court in Siaya County has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty of killing his grandmother over food.
The remanded, Maxwell Omondi, went to live with his grandmother in December 2020. His stay was short-lived since he killed her two months later.
Court records indicate that on 8th February, Omondi arrived home located in Rarieda, Siaya county, at 6.30 pm. He found his 82-year-old grandmother seated on her bed and asked for food. His grandmother told him that there was no food in the house.
He then asked her for flour to make porridge, but she said Omondi’s father had not brought her any supplies. Angered by her response, he tried to pull her from the bed. She tried to defend herself by hitting him with her walking stick, but he overpowered her. She fell off the bed and lay on the floor unconscious.
Omondi panicked and ran to his cousin’s house, where he spent his night. The next morning, they found his grandmother dead.
In his confession, Omondi said that he had no intention of killing the deceased. Justice Roselyne Aburili sentenced him to 10 years in prison, noting that he was a young first-time offender who had overreacted to his aged grandmother.
