Police officers in Kisii are investigating the cause of a fire that burned down the larger area of the county assembly chambers.
The building that was constructed by the non-functional Kisii municipality houses the governor and the deputy’s governor offices, Speaker’s office, and county assembly chambers.
The entire broadcasting section and the assembly gallery have been burnt down. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Governor James Ongwae directed the police to speed their investigations and establish what caused the inferno. He was speaking after visiting the assembly to assess the damage caused.
“I have directed responsible authorities to seal the off the assembly. This is a big inferno in need of quick and thorough investigation. I urge experts to come in and assess the matter,” stated Governor Ongwae.
According to sources, the fire broke out while assembly service board members and David Akombo the assembly Speaker had a meeting with assembly forum officials.
Also present were the National Gender and Equality Commission and commissioners from the Commission of Administrative Justice who had come to discuss issues raised by the members of the county assembly.
Governor Ongwae also commended the Kisii fire department for responding in a timely manner and putting the fire under control.
