Police in Meru are searching for one constable David Nyamwea of Laare Police Station after he reportedly shot his girlfriend Everlyn Njoki.
The incident happened at around 9.30 pm on the night of Saturday outside Laare Police Station canteen.
Preliminary investigations have not yet established the reason for the shooting, but it is suspected that the two had a relationship quarrel.
According to a junior officer who witnessed the incident, in the process of administering first aid to the victim, the suspect managed to escape.
The witness further revealed that Nyamweya had recently been transferred to Kabachi Police Station approximately 20 kilometres from Laare.
Police confirmed that a search for the said assailant is underway.
“A combined team of police officers have been mobilised and are searching for him,” said police.
Police collected the firearm used in the shooting and 9 used cartridges at the crime scene.
The victim was rushed to Meru Level Five Hospital where she was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi.
Cry for justice
The victim’s charged family and friends stormed Laare Police Station to demand justice. According to her father, Njoki had been living with the officer, but the relationship turned bumpy after Nyamweya’s transfer.
“She (Njoki) said the man had been beating her and was unhappy in the relationship. I talked to them and they reconciled. The two had visited my home and I had agreed to their relationship. I didn’t expect this to happen. I want justice for my daughter,” said the victim’s father.
