Kitui Governor, Charity Ngilu has reacted after her lawyers were thrown out of the Kitui County Assembly.
The Kitui County Assembly speaker had invited the governor to appear in front of the Assembly to answer to allegations of corruption.
The allegations had led to the County’s MCAs to pass a motion to impeach Charity Ngilu.
Process improper and illegitimate
Charity Ngilu confirmed the incident in a statement.
The governor called the move to impeach her as a witch hunt. Furthermore, she stated that the process was improper and illegitimate.
“The County Assembly that invited me (in person or represented by counsel) to answer to allegations in a witch-hunt impeachment motion have violently kicked out my lawyers. If a proper and legitimate impeachment, why resort to draconian measures?” Ngilu said.
She also shared the letter of invitation from Speaker, George M Ndotto.

Indeed, the letter stated that she was to appear before the assembly on 29th June, 2020 ‘either in person or through a legal counsel for the purposes of answering to the allegations stated in the motion.’
Legal counsel humiliated
Videos on social media indeed showed the lawyers to Ngilu roughed up and thrown out of the County Assembly gates.
“Ask the Speaker to give us a letter of cancellation,” Morris Kimuli, one of lawyers, said through the gates, “This is a public office. You invite the governor here but do not want her lawyers to get in. This is not what we asked for.”
The Kitui MCAs, though, have yet to issue a statement on why they threw out the lawyers.

Impeachment motions rising
In addition, impeachment for Ngilu comes just a few days after Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru, survived impeachment. The Special Senate Commitee cleared her of all charges. The conclusion of the motion, however, did not shock many.
The Kirinyaga County MCAs had moved to impeach the governor on allegations of abuse of offices.
