Taita Taveta County Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha has vowed to ensure that people from countries with confirmed COVID 19 cases do not sneak into the country via the Tanzanian porous border.
According to the commissioner, the country is at risk during the Coronavirus outbreak as people might enter the country through the border without being screened.
She has reiterated that only Kenyan citizens and foreigners with valid residence or working permits will be allowed to come into the country via the border. All the entries will be required to self-quarantine or be put in National quarantine facilities for 14 days.
“Nobody will be allowed into the country except Kenyan citizens and foreigners with a valid resident or working permits, when allowed they must proceed to self-quarantine or to a Government-designated quarantine facility. Porous borders place Kenya at risk from countries with confirmed cases, my team will not relent on protecting the Kenyan population in every corner bordering Tanzania” Said Commissioner Rhoda.
Goods and people from Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi who have confirmed Corona Virus cases will not be allowed past Holili-Taveta One-Stop Border post.
The County Government has called on the Business operators in the County to provide clean water and liquid soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer to their customers. Those businesses who won’t comply by the directives will have their businesses shut.
The County has distributed water tanks strategically in all day-to-operational markets. The strict rules come at a time when the country has confirmed seven cases.
Counties are on high alert with the aim being to combat the virus.
