Busia County residents are still in shock after two men posing as customers shot a hotel owner dead.
Police officers reported that the incident took place at 8 p.m last night. The two men who are still at large managed to access the Texas Annex hotel establishment on the pretence of being customers.
Alfred Abayo, the deceased, was seated at the balcony of his hotel at the time. On seeing him, one of the men drew a gun and shot him at close range. The two men ran away after the murder.
Sospeter Ojammong’, the Busia County Governor, released a statement on the matter. He condemned the incident and noted that the deceased played a significant role in the hotel industry’s progression in Busia county.
“I urge the police to move with speed and investigate the cause of the incident and bring perpetrators to book; the era of “business rivalry,” has no room in modern Kenya,” Mr Ojamong’ said.
Additionally, the Governor said he would collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that all significant public facilities have CCTV cameras. By doing so, the cameras would capture crucial evidence.
Gangs in Busia County have been killing businessmen in the area. In October 2020, an armed gang raided the home of a prominent businessman. A police report revealed that the attackers had a rifle.
Francis Kooli, the County Police Commander, said that the attackers beat up the businessman but did not steal anything.
“He had deep cuts in the head and neck. He also alleged that one of the thugs was armed with a rifle, but we have ascertained that they did not fire any shots,” the police boss said at the time.
