CS Magoha on the rush to beat President’s deadline on schools reopening

Education CS George Magoha is in a rush to beat President Uhuru Kenyatta’s deadline on reopening schools.

The CS has called for a meeting of all education stakeholders, which will take place on Monday, September 14, 2020, at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, starting from 8 am.

According to a document seen by the press, CS Magoha’s call comes after a presidential directive on the National Consultative Conference’s convening to chart Kenya’s Post Covid-19 future.

The discussions are set to come up with final protocols on the resumption of learning after six months of confusion that has left learners, teachers, and parents stranded and frustrated.

Professor Magoha now has one week left to consolidate the input of education stakeholders and present it to the president at the National Consultative Conference.

In his 11th address to the nation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the conference to be convened in three weeks from August 26, 2020.

The Professor also warned stakeholders against engaging in corruption regarding the supply of 622,357 desks, chairs, lockers ahead of the reopening of schools.

Under the Economic Stimulus Programme for the furniture upgrade, which targets SMEs and local artisans across the country, the government has allocated Sh 1.9 Billion.

Additionally, the government has deployed the same model that was used to identify beneficiaries of the Covid-19 weekly stipend, Older Persons Cash Transfer, and Kazi Mtaani Initiative in order to ensure openness, transparency, and nondiscrimination in the identification of suppliers.

With the presumption that most potential suppliers may not have the capacity to deliver on such a project, the government will finance them with up to 50 percent front load.

The government has also directed the National government administrators and filed officers to follow through all aspects of the supply.

Design samples and technical specifications are available to all County Commissioners, Deputy County Commissioners, and County Directors of Education.
