Death toll from Naivasha bus accident hits nine

Date:

Members of St Ann Catholic Church in Kongoni, Naivasha, were on Sunday trying to come to terms with the death of fellow worshippers on Saturday.

The death toll from the bus accident hit nine after another died while undergoing treatment at Naivasha sub-county hospital.

The crash occurred after a bus ferrying mourners from Kisii to Naivasha was involved in an accident with a lorry transporting sand along the Mai Mahiu-Narok road.

Seven of the victims died on the spot and the eighth on arrival at Mai Mahiu health centre.

Naivasha subcounty hospital superintendent Angeline Ithondeka said they received 16 patients following the Saturday morning crash.

She said 11 were treated and discharged while five were in critical condition and were still undergoing treatment.

“One of the patients, however, passed on while undergoing treatment and we shall transfer some of them to Nakuru for specialised treatment,” she said.

Hospital chairman Gatheru Mwangi said they were well equipped and staffed to deal with the high number of patients received.

He said medical staff responded to distress calls, adding that they had ambulances in case any patient needed to be transferred.

A relative to one of the patients, Peter Kuria, termed his condition as serious adding that they were seeking to transfer him for specialised treatment.

He said that the victim was among youths riding on the lorry to go load sand when the accident occurred, throwing them meters away.

Speaking on phone, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the incident, adding that four sand loaders in the ill-fated lorry were seriously injured.

He said that seven of the victims died on the spot while the eighth passed on while undergoing treatment in Mai Mahiu.

“We have lost a total of nine people after the driver of a mini-bus veered off his lane and rammed into a lorry heading in the opposite direction,” he said.
