Deputy President William Ruto has expressed his amazement after his fierce rival, Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga joined the hustler nation debate.
The DP who considers himself a hustler has been using the hustler nation narrative to win support from Kenyans ahead of the 2022 general elections as he eyes for the Presidential seat.
The DP stated that the country’s leaders had been clinging on divisive politics of ethnicity and tribalism and forgotten about the poor and jobless people suffering.
He added that the commanding hustler narrative will be a revolution in the country’s politics.
“Finally, we have the conversation of our lifetime: The hustler. Until now, our politics was hostage to the stupidity of ethnicity or our person which is the reason why almost half of Kenyans live in poverty and 16 million are jobless. The tribeless hustler imperative is a revolution in our politics,” the DP said.
Speaking in Kisumu, Raila Odinga who is also eyeing the country’s top seat accused the DP of hiding behind the hustler name challenging him to focus on development and unity.
He went on to give examples of leaders who came from humble beginnings to leading the country.
“Founding father Jomo Kenyatta was a meter reader. The late Daniel Moi was from humble beginnings as a teacher who rose to become the second President. Mwai Kibaki was also a son of a peasant who rose to become the third President. Jaramogi (Oginga Odinga) was also from a peasant father and became the first vice President,” Raila said.
DP Ruto’s hustler narrative has not been received well by his opponents with Raila Odinga being at the forefront of accusing him of lying to Kenyans. The two have been going at each other at different functions.
Raila recently accused the DP of being a wolf in a sheep’s skin, using donations to win support from Kenyans.
He added that people should be wary of the DP’s donations as his salary does not allow him to offer such donations on a daily basis.
