How government will honor late Nyachae – President Uhuru Kenyatta

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday 15 February 2021 announced that the Gusii Stadium will be renamed the Simeon Nyachae Stadium in honor of the late Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae.

Speaking in Kisii County during Nyachae’s funeral service President Kenyatta also revealed that an additional Ksh.150 million will be allocated to the Kisii County Government for the completion of the stadium before the end of this year and upgrade it to an international standard.

He explained that the move will be in appreciation of Nyachae’s exemplary service to Kenyans and the people of Kisii.

The head of state stated that Mzee Nyachae will live forever in Kenyans’ hearts, minds, and memories and in the history of the nation, which is entirely grateful for his exemplary service.

“In his memory and in consultation with the leadership of Kisii County and to fortify our appreciation of this great son of Kenya, we have considered it fit to rename this stadium The Simeon Nyachae Stadium Kisii,” he said.

The President further directed the Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed to begin the development of a sports academy at Nyanturago Stadium, which will also be renamed Nyantika Maroro Sports Academy.

Gusii Stadium successfully hosted the sixth edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (Kicosca) games in August 2018 and the 40th edition of the Kenya Communications Sports Organisation (Kecoso) Games the following year.

The first in command while eulogizing the late Nyachae described him as an honest man and a man of dignity.

He added that without doubt, he was a disciplinarian but not only on disciplining others but also in the discipline with which he carried himself.

He told the mourners present that the most important message they need to take home is that they had not attended the burial service to talk about somebody who used to talk to people and do the opposite.

He noted that the late Simeon Nyachae led by example and what he told people to do, he also did it himself.

During the service Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, South Mugirango Member of Parliament Sylvanus Osoro, and former Kisii Mayor Samuel Omwando were arrested over alleged plans to incite chaos at the service.

Mzee Nyachae died on February 1, 2021, at the Nairobi Hospital after a long illness. He was aged 88.
