Interior Ministry official killed during morning jog

A family in Lokichogio, in Turkana County, is mourning the death of a Senior Immigration Department officer Philip Sitienei, who was shot dead on Sunday, May 9 in the morning.

According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) released on Sunday, May 9, the police officer was shot dead during a morning jog along Lokichogio-Nadapal road.

Sitienei was attacked by unknown assailants who shot him in the head and in the leg, killing him on the spot.

“NPS officers are probing a case whereby today at 7:00 am, Philip Sitienei, a senior Immigration Department officer, was shot and killed along Lokichogio-Nadapal road.

Sitienei was on his routine mourning jog to keep fit when unknown attackers shot him on the leg, shoulder and head. He died instantly,” read part of the statement.

The police body promised to deliver justice for the fallen officer and vowed to carry out thorough investigations over the incident.

“We denounce this heinous act with the strongest terms possible. No stones will be left unturned until we get the killers of the Civil Servant.

NPS remains committed to guarding the lives and property of people living in Kenya,” the statement continued.

Speaking to journalists, area Assistant County Commissioner Kennedy Omollo confirmed the incident, saying that the attackers must have been highly skilled individuals and knew the officer very well.

The officers who assessed the scene established that the attackers must have been two, judging by the number of footprints found at the scene of the crime.

A motorist along the highway spotted the lifeless body of the officer, which was taken to Lodwar County Referral Hospital mortuary.

This report comes moments after the inspector General of Police (IG) Hillary Mutyambai directed the Gender and Children’s directorate to investigate harassment reports in the police force.

This order came after a female officer went viral with a clip narrating her frustrations in the police force.

“Sir, please allow me to resign from the police force because I can thrive elsewhere. Even if it means resignation without pay, I will not mind,” she said in the video.
