Joseph Irungu widely known as Jowie has finally been released from state custody on Ksh. 2 million cash bail or Ksh. 3 million bond.
Jowie was arrested in September 2018 together with her then fiancée former TV queen Jacque Maribe in connection with the murder of the late businesswoman Monica Kimani. Maribe, however, was granted bail but Jowie remained in custody.
While granting him the bail at the Milimani Law Courts, Justice James Wakianga stated that the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence for his detention. Jowie has been forbidden by Justice James from commenting on the case.
His release comes after his legal team had tried two times but failed to secure cash bail for their client.
Irungu was directed to report to his area chief every Thursday of every month with the chief directed to make monthly reports to the court’s deputy registrar. He was also ordered to leave his passport in court and cautioned against getting a new one.
Monica Kimani was found dead in her Lamuria Gardens apartment at night with her throat cut wide open after her trip from South Sudan.
