Kenyans turn against Sakaja as traitor banners appear on highways

Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja’s relationship with Nairobians seems to be hanging on a thin thread after Nairobians woke up to anti-Sakaja banners on highways.

The banners had an image of Sakaja and a text castigating the senator.

This harsh criticism follows Sakaja’s support towards the revenue sharing formula. According to a section of Nairobians, the senator is a traitor. The banners also put this point across, claiming he betrayed Nairobians.

“Sakaja is a traitor. You do not represent Mandera, represent us, Nairobi,” read one of the banners.

According to some Nairobians, Sakaja betrayed them after he put the interest of Mandera and Garissa before Nairobi. If the revenue sharing formula had succeeded, Nairobi would have been among the beneficiaries.

The city’s allocation would shoot from ksh 15.8 b to ksh 21.2 billion. However, this new formula significantly disadvantages some coastal and north-eastern counties that are sparsely populated.

Counties set to benefit from the new revenue sharing formula are Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Uasin Gishu.

Netizens tear down Sakaja online.

The discussion also found its way to Twitter, where netizens made it trend for the better part of the day. Sakaja was trending under the hashtag #SakajaBetraysNairobi.

One netizen wondered how Sakaja is planning on convincing Nairobians to vote for him after he denied them a chance to get more funds.ย  The tweep was also quick to mention Sakaja’s arrest after he went drinking past curfew hours.

However, the controversial senator took to his Twitter page and claimed someone had paid for the hashtag to trend. He further encouraged tweeps to continue tweeting so that the one who started it can earn.

Sakaja also dismissed the road banners as a form of desperation. He further claimed that he is enjoying all the promotion he is getting.

Here are some of the tweets. You can follow the Twitter discussion here.
