From HDU beds to ventilators: Innovative Kenyans critical hand in fighting COVID-19

Kenya’s innovative talents could be critical in fighting against COVID-19.

With most industries in Kenya taking an economic hit from slowed down economic activities, a number of innovative Kenyans have moved in to solve the no small matter of plugging brick and motor gaps in Kenya’s health system.

Hospital beds

A Twitter page by the name Thika Town Today shared two stories of welders who have turned to make hospital beds.

With counties expected to set aside at least 300 beds to isolate COVID-19 patients, these innovators could just be the ones to plug that gap.

One Meshak Otieno, according to the post, makes hospital beds that can be used in isolation wards.

Another innovator, Mungai Gathogo, from Githunguri, Kiambu, has also been making hospital beds.

Gathogo’s beds can be used in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), in the general ward, and in the ICU.

The detailed hospital beds include a drip stand and a mesh under the bed for an oxygen cylinder. It also has a head raising gear for comfort and a feeding table.

The news on innovative Kenyans is great as the country enters into a critical stage of the COVID-19 infection.

University students make ventilators

Furthermore, Kenyatta University students also showed that they were up to the task of making ventilators. The students created a working prototype of a ventilator. Ventilators are essential in keeping critically ill COVID patients breathing properly.

Infections in Kenya has risen over 10,000, with reports now emerging that some hospitals are running out of beds.

So far, few counties have met the requirement to have at least 300 isolation beds to cater to COVID-19 patients.

The news about Meshak and Gathogo further highlights the innovation in Kenya’s youth, who are using their talents to solve problems.

Recently, news of a Kenyan innovator using discarded electronic parts to create motorized wheelchairs also hit the webs.

Indeed, in this fight against COVID-19, our innovators are our way out of the worst.
