The Nyeri couple that wanted to give up their children because they could not afford to care for them have finally received help.
A local TV station highlighted their story which touched the hearts of many. The two have been together for five years and are blessed with two children. Both Mr. Ndung’u and his wife are casual laborers. However, the harsh economic times have made it impossible for them to fend for their family.
The couple had decided to give up their two children. They believed that the decision was in the best interest of the children because they could no longer provide for them.
Touched by their plight, Kenyans came out in large numbers to support them. The first people to come to their aid were police officers from Karatina Police station. They gave the couple food that would sustain them for a while.
Other Kenyans have also offered financial help and food. Some even went ahead to offer the young couple jobs.
“I honestly have no right words to thank those that came out to support us. We have been getting visitors and hundreds of phone calls from people willing to help. Now our children can stay with us because we have enough to feed them,” a happy Mr. Ndung’u said.
Neighbors, politicians, and corporates have all contacted the couple in one way or another to offer their help. Some personally visit the couple in their home.
“We received a mattress, a lot of food and even clothes. I was offered a job at a local supermarket and my wife has also been getting job offers,” Mr. Ndung’u explained
The family of four has been living in a single-roomed house. They all sleep in a small bed. Their current employer was kind enough to let them stay in the house free of charge.
The couple hopes that with the new job offers, their condition will improve.
