The issue of schools reopening has been a topic for debate the past few weeks with some parents insisting that schools reopen and others completely against it. There has also been contradicting news on the same topic.
So far, colleges and universities have received the clearance to recall students for face to face learning on campus. However, the government is still considering the option of reopening schools this year.
On Monday, Education CS George Magoha said that they set aside decision to reopen schools in January 2021. He noted that the Covid-19 Education Emergency Response Committee had 10 days to propose an earlier date because the Covid-19 curve seems to be flattening.
Magoha said that they will present the proposal by the committee to a national education conference scheduled for 25th September.
“I called this meeting today to engage the taskforce and various education stakeholders on the process of drafting a new proposal. We will present the proposal before the larger national education stakeholder’s conference. The conference will take place on September 25,” Magoha said after attending the crisis meeting at KICD.
Universities and Technical and Vocational Institutions
A source revealed that CS Magoha already cleared universities and Technical and Vocational Institutions to recall students.
“The CS asked university senates to determine their individual university opening dates based on the fact that the institutions have reopened virtually for the September –December Semester,” the source said.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i will co-chair the national consultative conference next week. At the conference, there will be discussions on the country’s future post Covid-19.
The education committee will present a detailed report. The report will focus on how to prepare schools and institutions of higher learning for safe reopening.
“It is time to relook at earlier proposals regarding reopening of schools. We are looking at all aspects, but have not come to a consensus on when schools can reopen, or set any date,” Magoha said.
