Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has sworn to punish defiant headteachers who have chosen not to follow his directives. The CS also said that he would ensure that the teachers face disciplinary actions as the law requires.
Magoha said that it had come to his attention that some headteachers had increased school fees. Additionally, he said that the teachers were extorting parents by charging them outrageously.
Before schools reopened, CS Magoha had directed that headteachers should not increase school fees. He had also cautioned them against sending learners home over fee arrears. He made this directive in an attempt to cushion parents against the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to the media at Embu County Primary School, Magoha said that he would punish headteachers who go against his directives.
“There are headteachers who are unlawfully increasing fees. They should desist before we expose and punish them,” Magoha said.
Magoha also said that some schools had imposed mandatory lunch fees. The Ministry of Education had earlier on directed that lunch fees should be optional.
Some schools had also asked parents to pay for desks, yet the government had a 2 billion shillings project that catered for desks. Magoha reiterated that his Ministry had already released the funds. He noted that those claiming otherwise were making baseless accusations.
