Baba Dogo ward MCA and Former Nairobi mayor Geofrey Majiwa have been sworn in as the third Deputy Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.
Majiwa was confirmed to the position by Speaker Benson Mutura during Tuesday afternoon’s plenary session.
The Speaker noted that there was no other candidate who presented their certificates on time.
Ngei MCA Redson Otieno was the only member who had shown interest in the position but failed to present his papers.
The post was left vacant after the resignation of former deputy speaker John Kamango on Thursday last week.
Mutura stated that his new deputy was found qualified for the position after a thorough vetting of his papers.
As a result, the Speaker went ahead and swore in the former Nairobi Mayor as his deputy in accordance with the Nairobi COUNTY Assembly standing orders that states that in the event there is only one aspirant for the deputy speaker’s docket, and is found to have the prerequisite qualities, then he or she will automatically be sworn in without the need for an election.
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MCAs in the chambers chanted ‘handshake handshake’ as Majiwa, who is also the ODM Party MCA, took his oath before the House.
The Speaker expressed his Faith in him, noting that he believes Majiwa will bring new ideas in the assembly that will push it forward.
A month ago, the ODM Party had nominated the new Deputy Speaker following an agreement with the Jubilee Party that the opposition will take up the position.
Speaking to the press, Majiwa said he was up to the task to take over from where the former Deputy Speaker left.
The former Mayor thanked ODM for nominating him, adding that he was nominated due to his experience in the political field in Nairobi County.
However, Waithaka MCA Anthony Kiragu criticized the process claiming the law was not followed.`
