George Magoha, the Education Cabinet Secretary, has banned hiring school buses for private events.
The CS made this announcement while speaking at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development during the release of Form One selection results for 2020 KCPE candidates.
“Those seeking services of school buses must get authority from the Ministry. To avoid any doubt, school buses are to carry children using Covid-19 protocol. We will take action against anybody using the buses for any other reason,” Magoha said.
“We will not sit and allow people to misuse our children’s facilities. The Ministry will give authorisation from Jogoo house. It is immaterial whether you are a government official,” he added.
Most people hire school buses at a fee when going to weddings or funerals. The rates usually vary depending on the bus capacity.
Magoha noted that schools do not fumigate the buses after hiring them out. Consequently, they expose children and teachers to Covid-19.
At the same event, Magoha said that Form one students would report to school on 2nd August. National schools in the country will admit a total of 36,254 students; 18,848 boys and 17,406 girls.
Additionally, Magoha noted with concern that candidates had not received proper guidance on the secondary school selection process.
