Police officers have arrested a male student and his girlfriend for allegedly starting a school fire. The suspect studies at Kamama Boys in Embu County. He reportedly helped his girlfriend start a fire at Mogumo Girls’ High School. The fire razed a dormitory to the ground.
The form four male student allegedly sneaked into Mogumo Girls’ High School to give his girlfriend a cigarette lighter. She then used it to torch a dormitory that accommodated 220 students.
Anthony Mbogo, the Gichugu sub-county police commander, reported that they arrested the boy at Kimunye village, Kirinyaga County. Additionally, he revealed that the boy played a role in the Kamama Boys strike where there was destruction of property of unknown value.
“His parent told us teachers closed Kamama Boys in Embu last week after students destroyed school property,” the police boss said.
The arson in Mogumo Girls’ High School took place on 14th February between 2 and 3 pm. At the time, students were in their classes.
On 19th February, police officers arrested nine girls in connection with the fire. They took them to Kianyaga police station. During questioning, the girls mentioned the boy’s name.
“Some students who are in custody at Kianyaga Police Station mentioned the suspect, and they have agreed to be State witnesses,” Mr Mbogo said.
