Omari Lali, the boyfriend to Keroche Breweries Heiress Tecra Muigai was on Monday 13 July 2020 charged with murder in Lamu Law Courts.
Principle Magistrate Allan Temba made the ruling via a video link following the death of Tecra Muigai on Saturday, May 2 after claims that he was involved in her death.
The Principle Magistrate’s ruling came after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) reviewed toxicological evidence, detailed post mortem reports, and phone records.
Tecra’s family lawyers led by Siaya County Senator James Orengo expressed their delight as they asked that Lali be arraigned in before the judge to take the plea.
Tembo stated that he had given the police 24 hours to present Omar before the judge to take his plea.
“I allowed the decision by DPP to be taken to the next stage for murder plea taking. If unable to present him within 24 hours, then he should be given a police bond,” he directed.
The Keroche Heiress was found dead at a private house in Shella, Lamu where she was said to be living with her boyfriend Omari Lali.
Lali was arrested two days later and detained for 21 days as he was suspected to have been involved with Tecra Muigai’s death.
Lali’s arrest came after he reportedly gave detectives inconsistent accounts of how Tecra’s was cut short. At first, he said that Tecra tumbled down the stairs before changing the story saying that she tripped in the bathroom.
It was reported that Tecra’s mother sent a private helicopter to pick her from Manda Airport but she had already lost a lot of blood and succumbed to the injuries while receiving treatment in Nairobi.
Despite an application by the DPP and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to have Omari detained, he was released in May.
This was after Principle Magistrate Allan Sitati declined to hold him after the expiry of the 21-day pre-trial detention ended.
Tecra Muigai was the daughter of Keroche Breweries founders Joseph and Tabitha Karanja. She also had three siblings namely; Anerlisa Muigai, James Karanja, and Edward Muigai. At the time of her death, she was Keroche’s Strategy and Innovations Director.
