Police officer arrested for defiling school girl

A police officer has been arrested in Kirinyaga for allegedly defiling and impregnating a secondary school girl.

Ciagini chief Joseph Wanjohi confirmed the incident saying the officer impregnated a form three student whom he had befriended before disappearing on her.

“The matter was reported to my office a month ago by the mother of the victim. I then referred the case to the police who later arrested the suspect.” Said, Joseph.

The officer was arrested by his colleagues from his hideout place and will be detained until police are through with investigations.

“If it is proven  beyond reasonable doubts the policeman is guilty, legal action will be taken against him.” Said the chief.

An officer who sought anonymity said that the police was flushed out of his hideout on Wednesday.

“He went underground upon realizing we are searching for him, but we managed to arrest him.” Said the anonymous police officer.

The chief reiterated that defilement is a serious offense, which is also taken seriously.

However, according to an analysis done on police records, the majority of the pending cases in court were defilement cases between 2016 and 2018.

According to a report by a 17-member team, which was formed by former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga in 2019, to identify the law on children, 69 percent of all pending cases were sexual offenses against children.

The report further showed that witnesses decline to show up to supply the court with evidence.

The police also hardly visit scenes of crime to undertake thorough investigations, including questioning witnesses and carrying out forensic tests on the items recovered from the scenes.

In extreme cases, the victims end up getting defiled more or hurt by the police they seek help from.

December last year, for instance, police at Isebania were accused of throwing into a cell a defiled minor when she visited their station to report a case of defilement.

The girl had accused her father, who is also a police officer, of defiling her at their home after luring her into his bedroom.

The police locked the primary school pupil in order to conceal evidence and protect their colleague.
