How President Uhuru Kenyatta triggered the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko

Details have emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta triggered the impeachment motion against Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Sources in the Jubilee party have revealed that the President made a call to Jubilee leadership instructing them to work with ODM leader Raila Odinga to facilitate Sonko’s ouster.

Non-cooperation

A source close to the President revealed that the Governor’s non-cooperation with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and his constant attacks angered the President.

ODM leader Raila held a meeting with Jubilee party members to discuss Sonko’s ouster.

Speaking to a local daily, a Jubilee MCA spilled the beans. He said that the process to impeach Sonko started on Sunday evening. This was right after Jubilee leaders received a call from State House.

The MCA said that the leaders told them the reason for impeachment was Sonko’s refusal to work with NMS boss General Badi. Additionally, the Governor abused the President on numerous occasions.

General Badi took over the administration of Nairobi County this year. He is currently working on reviving the city. Unfortunately, the Nairobi Governor constantly tries to frustrate his efforts. Sonko has denied Badi access to funds. He refused to sign the 37 billion budget for NMS to get 2.71 billion for development.

Recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta made an attempt to reconcile the Nairobi Governor and the NMS boss. The two committed to work together. However, it was only a matter of time before Sonko went back to criticizing the NMS boss.

The Nairobi Governor constantly accuses the NMS boss for sabotaging his leadership. Despite the Governor’s attacks, Badi vowed to work on his own to improve service delivery in the county. Additionally, he said that he was seeking funds from bank loans and ministries to achieve his agenda.

Impeachment motion

Embakasi Ward MCA Michael Ogada moved a motion of impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday. The MCA revealed that 86 ward representatives had already appended their signatures in support of the motion.
