Maraga and Mutunga slammed for chauvinistic acts against Martha Koome

The Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization has criticised former Chief Justices WillyMutunga and David Maraga following their recent remarks on Constitution violation and Judiciary independence.

In a statement, the organisation said the two didn’t follow protocol and bypassed the newly sworn-in CJ to cement their opinion regarding the interpretation of the Constitution and legal philosophy.

The women-led movement further said such a move implied Martha Koome didn’t have the ability to perform her duties as expected.

“We never imagined a time would come when a woman of Martha Koome’s caliber would face chauvinistic actions. This behavior is common in most places of work where men behave as if women can’t solve a complex problem unless a man gives a solution,” read the statement in part.

The organisation denounced the duo’s behaviour and said they would stand in solidarity with Koome.

They also vowed to make an effort to change the attitude of people towards successful women in society.

Sentiments from Maendeleo ya Wanawake comes after David Maraga and Willy Mutunga expressed their exasperation with President Uhuru Kenyatta. The two accused the Head of State of violating the Constitution and disregarding the law.

Mutunga even wrote a letter to Uhuru telling him resignation was an option for any public servant who did not abide by the Constitution.

“The Constitution clarifies that those who find the powers it exercises annoying have no business continuing to occupy the offices,” he said.

Conversely, Maraga accused President Kenyatta of solely taking part in an operational crisis that caused problems in the judiciary and bringing services to a stop after failing to appoint 40 judges two years ago.
