Wajir County Governor Mohamed Abdi was on Tuesday evening impeached.
This is after a total of 37 members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in support of the County boss’ impeachment, with only 12 MCAs voting against it.
The members started debating at 2.30 pm and proceeded for four hours before they went into voting.
The county Speaker, Ibrahim Yakub, who presided over the sitting as he announced the impeachment, said that two-thirds of the members supported the impeachment of Governor Mohamed Abdi.
“I, the Speaker of the County Assembly hereby declare the Governor of Wajir Mohamed Abdi impeached after unanimous voting of the MCA in support of the same,” Speaker Yakub announced.
The MCAs left the chambers singing after voting their governor out.
Earlier in the day, there was drama as the governor’s lawyers, led by Mdegwa Mwangi, served the assembly with court papers even after earlier efforts by the assembly chamber to block the lawyers from accessing the assembly area.
The MCAs accused the governor of gross violation of the Constitution and abuse of office, among other vices.
The embattled governor was also blamed for poor service delivery.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the Wajir governor said that it was evident that some external forces were driving the agenda to have him impeached.
Abdi claimed that the Members of County Assembly had not given dialogue a chance, stating that they were being used by politicians back in Nairobi.
“The MCAs are being used by some politicians in Nairobi. Some are eyeing the Wajir top seat in 2022. I want to tell those using the county assembly to spread the gospel that their days are numbered,” Abdi said.
He added that he has the Wajir people behind him and would defeat his competitors during the elections, noting that he would do everything through his lawyers to defend his seat.
