Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party has unveiled Ms Agnes Kavindu as its candidate in the upcoming Machakos Senate by-elections.
Ms Agnes Kavindu is the former wife of former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, a Ruto ally.
Musyoka unveils Kavindu
Kalonzo Musyoka announced Ms Kavindu’s candidature on Wednesday morning at the party’s Karen offices at the ceremony. Ms Kavindu beat out two other candidates in the nomination process. Among them is a candidate that Muthama’s party, UDA (United Democratic Alliance), will field.
Kalonzo Musyoka and Muthama fell out bitterly last year, forcing Muthama to leave the party and team up with DP Ruto. And it appears as though Wiper seems keen to use the animosity between Muthama and Ms Kavindu to settle political scores.
Chosen on merit
However, Kalonzo Musyoka dismissed such claims. Musyoka said that the nomination was based on merit. He said the party had no business in breaking families.
“As Wiper Party, we don’t have business in breaking families by nominating Agnes Kavindu Muthama for Machakos seat,” Kalonzo said, “We nominated her due to her qualifications.”
Musyoka termed it a ‘fortunate’ that she shared a name with his political rival.
Ms Kavindu is also a member of the Building Bridges Initiative task force, though she left Jubilee for Wiper. However, while receiving her certificate, she said that she left with blessings from the party leader, President Kenyatta.
Kavindu had vied for the Machakos Woman Representative seat in 2017 with Jubilee. However, she had lost to Wiper’s Joyce Kamene.
Race for seat heats up
Ms Kavindu will now go up against Maendeleo Chap Chap’s Mutua Katuku and Bernard Muia, the former Machakos Deputy Governor. Mutua Katutu has previously served as a Cabinet Secretary.
The election will take place on March 18, 2021.
The Machakos Senate seat opened up after the death of Boniface Mutinda Kabaka. The deceased died while undergoing treatment at the ICU in a Nairobi hospital. The incident followed a lengthy-date with a teacher, following which the Senator collapsed in a Kilimani apartment.
