Prof Kiama installed as Vice Chancellor of UON in a virtual ceremony

Professor Stephen Kiama has been installed as the 8th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi (UoN).

In a virtual ceremony that was streamed live for staff and students to view, Prof Kiama said he endeavors to work his best and keep making UoN a center of excellence.

Professor Kiama was appointed by the university council chaired by Prof Julia Ojiambo on January 6.

His road to replace Prof Peter Mbithi was however not straight and smooth, as at some point Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof George Magoha revoked his appointment and disbanded the university council.

Prof Ojiambo, during the ceremony, urged the deputy vice-chancellors to cooperate and support the new head of the institution.

“Prof Kiama, you are the best among equals, now the hard work begins,” she said.

CS Magoha further smeared goodwill, saying the government will safeguard the university’s position.

Chancellor Vinjoo Rattansi urged the DVCs to work with Kiama to spearhead decisions and curriculum reforms in the university.

Professor Stephen Kiama is a veterinary surgeon and doctorate holder in Structural Biology from the University of Bern, Switzerland.
