Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Macharia Kamau has tested positive for the novel covid-19.
News of the PS testing positive first surfaced online on the 30th of July 2020.
Jane Kariuki, head of communications at the Foreign Affairs ministry, confirmed this information. According to her, the PS found out he was positive on Friday the 24th of July 2020. Since then, he has been self-isolating at his home.
However, Jane expressed the Ministry’s disappointments after the information was leaked. She further added that PS Kamau had not issued out authority to anyone to disclose that information.
“It’s clearly a violation of privacy because they didn’t have the authority to share the conversation with the whole country. We might have to seek legal address,” she added.
Jane also said that they had informed the PS, and they might seek legal address.
According to Jane, the PS had also delegated some of his duties to ambassador Tom Amollo (Political and Democratic Secretary). He, however, will perform his other duties from home.
He only has mild symptoms.
According to Jane, PS Macharia was experiencing minor flu-like symptoms. She further explained that he was progressing well.
The Ministry of Health had also tested other Staff at the Ministry in line with Covid-19 precautionary measures. The workers are also adhering to strict Covid-19 health regulations, which maintains calmness at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
From the leaked WhatsApp conversation, The PS was against how the Ministry of Health was conducting contact tracing. The discussion also claimed that there was no insurance cover for Covid-19 patients.
These allegations come after blogger Allai also complained that health insurance companies did not want to foot coronavirus related bills.
However, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) claimed that they would foot bills for their Covid-19 positive. But, they will only cover bills if the patients go to public hospitals (Mbagathi County hospital, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research hospital, and the Kenyatta National Hospital).
