Following an outcry by Siaya residents, Cornel Rasanga, the Siaya Governor, has suspended all County enforcement officers and called for fresh recruitment.
The Governor explained that he had received a lot of complaints from residents. He noted that they accused the officers of extortion, corruption, and violence. Consequently, the reputation of the County was at stake.
“In the recent past, we have received complaints from Siaya residents that county enforcement officers are rogue. We have resolved to suspend all of them to bring sanity in the department,” Mr Rasanga said.
The Governor said he is actively fighting cartels that tarnish his name. Additionally, he said he would rid the county administration of decay.
“The practice perpetuated by some county enforcement officers is contrary to the laws of Kenya. Therefore, I direct the County Secretary and Public service Board to conduct fresh recruitment to resolve the complaints in totality,” the Governor said.
The Governor noted that some of the officers solicit bribes from traders, harass them publicly, and even steal revenue receipt books. Additionally, they fail to perform their duties.
Rasanga said that they would only reinstate officers that are innocent. Those who are guilty will have to go home for good.
