Six Deaths That Shook Kenya in 2019

Former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore and record-breaking marathoner Eliud Kipchoge topped the list for the most searched personalities in 2019.

In an announcement made by Google in Nairobi on December 9 as reported by The Standard, celebrated Kikuyu music icon John De’ Mathew who died on August 18, 2019, came in third in the list of most searched Kenyans followed by former Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso.

Former Kibera MP Ken Okoth and slain businessman Tob Cohen also got in the list at fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Okoth died on July 26, 2019, after a long battle with colon cancer while Tob Cohen’s body was found on September 13, 2019, in a septic tank at his home in Kitisuru, Spring Valley, Nairobi.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who never shies away from controversies, came in seventh followed by Jonathan Moi who was the son of former President Daniel Moi.

Others in the list of top searches by Kenyans included slain student Ivy Wangechi who was murdered in cold blood by her estranged boyfriend in Eldoret in April 2019 and former news anchor Esther Arunga Timberlake.

In the ‘how-to’ searches, Kenyans googled how to drive a manual car the most, followed by how to fill annual tax returns.

Passport application, guidelines on opening businesses, making money, success, getting a baby boy, checking CRB status, KCPE results and getting pregnant also featured among top searches.

The list of most searched movies and series included Game of ThronesMoney Heist, Avengers Endgame and Bird Box.

Others included When They See Us and Sex and The City as the most popular movies and series.

Top trending news searches included Form One selection for 2020, the Likoni Ferry tragedy, BBI report, Kibra by-election, Ethiopian Airlines crash, KCPE results in 2019, Dusit Riverside attack and Census 2019.

The list of international personality searches included Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe, musicians Oliver Mtukudzi and Nipsey Hustle, David Luiz, Bruno Fernandez, Dwayne Johnson, Harry Maguire and footballer Nicolas Pépé.

Health queries most searched by Kenyans included calculating BMI, losing belly fat, losing weight, reducing tummies and getting pregnant.

In the lists of sports searches were the Africa Cup of Nations 2019, UEFA Nations League, ICC World Cup 2019, Rugby World Cup, EPL, Women’s World Cup, Kariobangi Sharks vs Everton and Zarika vs Phiri.
