Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has come through for Nairobians once again after announcing that he was waiving the interest on all land rate defaulters in the county.
The Governor released a notice in the same. In the notice, he explained that the waiver would only apply to people who pay their outstanding rates in full within one month. The period of the waiver started on 15th September and ends on 15th October.
“The ratepayer must clear in full the total principal land rate. They should also pay 10% administrative costs based on interest amount they are to pay,” Sonko’s notice reads in part.
In the statement, the Governor warned land rate defaulters that the government would institute legal consequences. One of the consequences he noted was that the government would compell the tenants of the defaulters to pay rent directly to the County Government.
The tenants would pay their rent due to the government until the outstanding rates are paid in full.
Additionally, land rate defaulters also risk withdrawal of any licence/permit granted in their premises.
The statement was clear that charges for unpaid rates plus interest would continue to accumulate until the defaulters settle the outstanding amount. Those whose cases for recovery of rates arrears are pending in court would have to pay the legal costs as well.
In collaboration with the Kenya Revenue Authority , the County Government of Nairobi has a cashless payment system. For this reason, land rate defaulters can easily make their payments.
There are two main accounts where you can make payments i.e the Cooperative Bank and the National Bank.
For Cooperative Bank, the account name is Nairobi City County KRA Revenue Account and the account number is 0114170941000.
For National Bank, the account name is Nairobi City County KRA Revenue Account and the account number is 01071225251100.
The Governor urged Nairobians to take advantage of the waiver and pay the outstanding land rates.
