Student commits suicide in police cell

A 19-year-old student ended his life after officers locked him inside a police cell at Kilibwoni Police Post.

Meshark Kiprop, a student at  Ndubeneti Secondary School, made a rope using a piece of cloth and used it to hang himself from the window of his cell.

Police officers had arrested the student after a domestic dispute. Kiprop had threatened to kill one of his family members during the dispute hence his arrest.

Speaking to the press,Nandi County Deputy Police Commander David Kirui confirmed the incident. He revealed that Kiprop had indeed threatened to kill his sister, Mercy Chebet.

The Conty Police boss explained that officers heard screams coming from Kiprop’s cell. On going to check what was happening, they found Kiprop’s lifeless body hanging on the pieece of cloth.

Residents close to the family have alleged that the deceased was a drug addict. However, police officers are yet to confirm these allegations.

Officers transferred Kiprop’s body from the police station to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital mortuary. Pathologists will conduct a post-mortem later on.

Mr Kirui revealed that officers have launched an invedtigation on the matter. They are trying to establish reasons why the student decided to take his life.

Neglect

Reports have revealed that the reason why Kiprop threatened to kill his sister was because he felt that the other family members had neglected them.Officers are yet to interview the family on the allegations.

Meshark Kiprop is not the first student to commit student. There have been several reports where school going children have committed suicide for various reasons. In 2019, a student committed suicide at the Nandi police post.

Statistics have shown that Kenya is one of the countries with a significant number of people that have committed suicide or attempted to do so.

With the global Covid-19 pandemic, cases of inmates committing suicide have also been on the rise.
